      There’s a consensus among SMT professionals: the core pain points of a production line have never been high-profile processes like screen printing or component placement; rather, they lie hidden in those seemingly insignificant “handling stages”—board loading, transfer, cooling, and board unloading. These processes have no complex technical barriers, yet they consistently account for the lion’s share of labor costs and are high-risk areas for various hidden defects.

     Unexplained scratches on PCBs with no one to blame, operators’ shaky hands causing subsequent dispensing misalignment, and PCB loading rhythms failing to keep up during line changeovers—these scenarios are almost a daily occurrence in every SMT workshop. Today, we’ll set aside vague industry theories and share an automated dispensing line solution that has been validated across multiple factories. Using just four core pieces of equipment, this solution builds a full-chain conveying system that minimizes manual intervention and resolves these long-standing production line issues at their root.

 

I. Basic Framework of the Entire Line: A Minimalist Process Covering All Scenarios

This solution avoids piling on redundant high-end configurations and achieves full-process automation through the most pragmatic chain design:

‌Standard tray loader → 1-meter variable-speed chain transfer station (equipped with dispensing machine) → 1-meter dual-mode cooling chain transfer station → Tray-style chain unloader‌

From the moment a PCB enters the loading machine, it moves continuously along the chain track, automatically completing the entire process—including dispensing, cooling, and stacking—until the finished frame is produced, with no manual contact with the board surface required throughout the entire process.

The solution offers maximum versatility: it is compatible with all small-to-medium-sized PCBs ranging from 50×50 mm to 350×250 mm, and no hardware or tooling changes are required during product changeovers; The entire line operates at a uniform height of 900±20 mm, fully conforming to industry-standard workbench specifications. This eliminates the need for operators to bend over or stand on tiptoes during prolonged shifts, significantly reducing fatigue; power is supplied via a universal 220V 50/60Hz standard, and AC plugs can be swapped to meet regional requirements, eliminating the need for additional adapters when exporting overseas.

 

II. Detailed Breakdown of Workstations: Every Design Element Precisely Addresses Production Line Pain Points

The core advantage of this solution has never been a simple assembly of equipment, but rather the targeted optimization of every workstation detail based on the unique characteristics of the dispensing process.

 

1. Standard Tray Loader: Powered by the 35B Chain, Freeing Labor from the Very Start

As the starting workstation of the production line, the stability of the loader directly determines the operational baseline for the entire line. We employ a proven tray-based loading design: operators simply place a standard tray filled with PCBs into position, and the equipment automatically feeds the boards into the track one by one. A single tray can hold 50 PCBs; once loaded, no supervision is required—the tray is simply replaced when empty. A single operator can simultaneously manage 2–3 production lines.

For the conveying section, we use the 35B chain, which has been time-tested in the SMT industry. It features a well-designed pitch and excellent wear resistance, ensuring it will not stretch or deform even under long-term, high-load operation. This completely avoids the common problem found in low-cost equipment—which uses lightweight chains to cut costs—where the chain loosens and causes boards to wobble after just six months of operation, thereby hindering all subsequent stations. The equipment has a rated load capacity of up to 2 kg, fully meeting the load requirements for standard PCBs and thick boards with carriers. Even if processes are upgraded in the future, there is no need to replace the equipment.

 

2. 1-Meter Variable-Speed Chain Transfer Station: Integrated Dispensing and Conveying to Maintain Precision

This is the core station of the entire dispensing production line. It also utilizes the 35B chain, maintaining completely uniform conveying specifications with the PCB loader. This ensures that PCBs experience no track-switching jolts during transit, resulting in smooth, displacement-free operation throughout the entire process.

Breaking with convention, we have mounted the dispensing machine directly on this transfer station. Once the PCB is conveyed by the chain to the designated position and precisely locked in place, the dispensing process begins immediately; upon completion, the PCB is conveyed directly to the next station via the chain. This design eliminates the intermediate handling step between the dispensing machine and the transfer station—each reduction in board transfer eliminates one risk of PCB misalignment, ensuring dispensing accuracy remains free from additional interference at the hardware level.

The 1-meter machine body length not only provides ample operating space for dispensing operations but also creates buffer zones for board entry and exit at the preceding and subsequent stations, completely preventing issues such as board interference or jams. Combined with stepless speed control, the system can flexibly adapt to cycle time differences between the dispensing machine and upstream/downstream equipment. It slows the conveyor pace during low-speed dispensing and accelerates throughput during high-efficiency operations, completely preventing production line bottlenecks or stoppages caused by single-station congestion.

 

3. 1-Meter Chain Dual-Mode Cooling Transfer Station: Flexible Mode Switching to Support Multi-Product Production

After dispensing is complete, the PCBs proceed directly to the cooling transfer station, which continues to use the 35B chain to ensure continuous conveying. In addition to its basic conveying functions, this equipment features two modes—“Through” and “Hold”—that can be switched with a single button:

In “Through-Run” mode, PCBs rapidly pass through the station without stopping, suitable for products with fast adhesive curing speeds and no additional cooling requirements, ensuring high-speed production line throughput; in “Dwell Cooling” mode, PCBs automatically lock onto the chain upon reaching the station and are conveyed to the next station only after the preset cooling duration has elapsed, suitable for processes requiring residual heat control to prevent temperature from affecting subsequent processes or board stacking results.

Mode switching is accomplished with a single knob, requiring no hardware replacement, and can accommodate products with different process requirements simultaneously. This is particularly well-suited for today’s mainstream flexible production scenarios involving multiple product varieties and small batches, eliminating the compatibility issues often associated with single-mode equipment.

 

4. Tray-Type Chain PCB Collector: Precise 25B Chain Operation, Fully Closed-Loop Process Without Ground Contact

As the final link in the production line, the PCB collector employs a tray-type design that pairs with the PCB loader. Each Magazine can hold 50 PCBs; once a tray is full, simply replacing it with an empty one ensures continuous production without interrupting the production line’s rhythm.

Given the operational characteristics of the PCB collection station, we specifically selected the 25B chain—unlike the first three stations, which require high stability to support PCBs during stationary operations, the core requirement for the PCB collector is to handle PCB reception and stacking with agility and flexibility. The 25B chain fully meets this station’s load-bearing and motion precision requirements while offering a more compact structure and more responsive board collection, ensuring that each station is equipped with the optimal configuration based on its specific needs—eliminating the waste associated with a one-size-fits-all approach.

The core value of this design is that it completely eliminates the need for manual panel handling throughout the entire process, thereby eliminating at the source potential issues such as grease contamination, accidental scratches, and panels being placed upside down caused by human contact. Once a full frame is collected, the operator can simply remove it and proceed to the next process step, ensuring high efficiency and safety throughout the entire process.

 

III. Practical Value: Improving Production Line Quality and Reducing Costs Through Attention to Detail

Once this fully automated dispensing production line is implemented, it will bring four immediately noticeable positive changes to the production line:

First, labor efficiency is significantly enhanced. Since no dedicated personnel are required to monitor and handle PCBs throughout the process, operators are freed from repetitive, mechanical labor and can focus on more valuable tasks such as process inspections; Second, product yield becomes stable and controllable. With zero manual contact with PCBs throughout the process, common defects such as scratches, contamination, and misalignment are virtually eliminated, and process consistency is greatly improved; Third, flexibility is maximized: boards of various sizes can be produced on the same line, cooling modes can be switched as needed, and changeovers require only parameter adjustments—no equipment replacement is necessary; fourth, the production line’s takt time is fully controllable. The variable-speed transfer station effectively accommodates speed differences between upstream and downstream stations, preventing material bottlenecks or production gaps. Daily production capacity can be accurately forecasted, enabling smoother production scheduling.
